Old Testament:  Psalms 29-30

Psalms 29

A psalm of David.
 1  Honor the LORD, you heavenly beings [1] ;
  honor the LORD for his glory and strength.
 2  Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.  3  The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea.  4  The voice of the LORD is powerful;
  the voice of the LORD is majestic.
 5  The voice of the LORD splits the mighty cedars;
  the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon.
 6  He makes Lebanon's mountains skip like a calf;
  he makes Mount Hermon [6]  leap like a young wild ox.
 7  The voice of the LORD strikes
  with bolts of lightning.
 8  The voice of the LORD makes the barren wilderness quake;
  the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
 9  The voice of the LORD twists mighty oaks [9]
  and strips the forests bare.
In his Temple everyone shouts, "Glory!"

 10  The LORD rules over the floodwaters. The LORD reigns as king forever.  11  The LORD gives his people strength.
  The LORD blesses them with peace.

Psalms 30

A psalm of David. A song for the dedication of the Temple.
 1  "I will exalt you, LORD, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me."  2  O LORD my God, I cried to you for help,
  and you restored my health.
 3  You brought me up from the grave, [3]  O LORD.
  You kept me from falling into the pit of death.

 4  Sing to the LORD, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name.  5  For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.  6  When I was prosperous, I said,
  "Nothing can stop me now!"
 7  Your favor, O LORD, made me as secure as a mountain.
  Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered.

 8  I cried out to you, O LORD.
  I begged the Lord for mercy, saying,
 9  "What will you gain if I die,
  if I sink into the grave?
Can my dust praise you?
  Can it tell of your faithfulness?
 10  Hear me, LORD, and have mercy on me.
  Help me, O LORD."

 11  You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.
  You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,
 12  that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
  O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever!

New Testament:  Acts 23:1-15

Acts 23 : 1-15

 1  Gazing intently at the high council, [1]  Paul began: "Brothers, I have always lived before God with a clear conscience!"
   2  Instantly Ananias the high priest commanded those close to Paul to slap him on the mouth.  3  But Paul said to him, "God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite! [3]  What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?"
   4  Those standing near Paul said to him, "Do you dare to insult God's high priest?"
   5  "I'm sorry, brothers. I didn't realize he was the high priest," Paul replied, "for the Scriptures say, `You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.' [5] "
   6  Paul realized that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!"
   7  This divided the council—the Pharisees against the Sadducees—  8  for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these.  9  So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue forcefully. "We see nothing wrong with him," they shouted. "Perhaps a spirit or an angel spoke to him."  10  As the conflict grew more violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul apart. So he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by force and take him back to the fortress.
   11  That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, "Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well." The Plan to Kill Paul
 12  The next morning a group of Jews [12]  got together and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.  13  There were more than forty of them in the conspiracy.  14  They went to the leading priests and elders and told them, "We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we have killed Paul.  15  So you and the high council should ask the commander to bring Paul back to the council again. Pretend you want to examine his case more fully. We will kill him on the way."
